Three Crowns.Posted by MaryB (Staffordshire, United Kingdom) on 10 September 2008 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio. No, not a public house, lol :D Ships Log....Part two. Sunrise and Sunset times.....No Sunrise and No sunset! All passengers and crew were back onboard by 1536 and the tenders secured for sea. The captain swung the ship with the advice of the Ice Pilot using the engines and thrusters. Once on a steady heading the Captain safely navigated through the many dangerous growlers and bergy bits, which were drifting from the glaciers. At 1645 Atemis entered Krossfjorden to catch a glimps of the magnificent glaciers on her starboard side. This was also the northern most latitude that Artemis navigated (79deg 10degN) whis is 650nm from the North Pole. At 1714 the Captain swung the ship and set a southeasterly course towards Tromso. I'm initally posting 3 photos from each port of call till we get to the end of the journey, then I'll post more photos from the trip in no particular order, to include birds, seals, flowers, buildings, midnight sun etc. just, to hopefully keep it interesting :) Ny Alesund, a coal ming town on Spitsbergen and base for several polar flights, is located on the southern shore of Kongs Fjord, an arm of the Arctic Ocean measuring 16 miles (26 km) long. Nearby is the Kongsvegen glacier. This earlier mining settlement is now an international research centre and also where the great expeditions to the North Pole in the 1920's started from here. The air-ship mast first used by Roald Amundsen and later by Umberto Nobile still stands here. ............................................................................................................
