In the south tower at Tutbury Castle, there is lots and lots of graffitti, it's facinating to read. The earliest date i could find on this one is 1794! so it's been going on for over two hundred years!!!
I really wish that I'd taken more, but hopefully i'll be going back May day holiday to another re enactment and will make a point of doing just that :)

@MadScientist: There are, did you notice the symbols?, one looks Masonic and the other I'm not sure of, it has two initials either side of what looks like it could be a port cullis, if i have time i'll do a little searching to see if i can find anything about them. T Crighton was obviously in the army, as his regiment is there the 74th, will have to search that too :)

So interesting. I wonder what it is that interests people to scratch their names in stone. The one symbol looks like a Masons sign.

@vu@granby - Wolfgang: Hi Wolfgang, it is the 74th Regiment but if you look below that you can see the word SALL, below that Henry Smith, the date 1794 is just below that :)

WOW. It definitely takes more effort to do grafitti 200 years ago.Carving is definitely more difficult than spraying paint!:)

I guess the 74 Regiment scratched by T.Crighton was the 74th(Highlanders) Regiment of foot who were posted to Canada in 1818.The 74th had fought in many of the Major battles of the Penninsular war(Badajoz,Salamanca, Vittoria etc) and were in Belgium in 1815 but did not take part in the Battle of Waterloo.(I´m a bit of a Penninsular war buff)
What an amazing piece of history
